Soup may be the oldest, easiest, and best remedy for a cold or the flu. Viral infections can’t be cured, you just need to let your body clear out the infection on its own. So for those days when your throat is burning, your nose won’t stop running, and you feel achy and hot all over, try one of these soups to get you through sick times.
1. Chicken Noodle Soup
This soup has been shown, scientifically, to increase immune system cell activity and decrease inflammation. It’ll also coat your sore throat and the noodles are easy to swallow without causing too much discomfort. Drink this soup with your cold medicine and then take a hot shower and let the steam relieve some of that sinus pressure. To get extra vitamins in, make sure to drink chicken soup that’s also made with lots of vegetables like carrots, celery, and even things like kale.
2. Matzo Ball Soup (aka “Jewish Penicillin”)
There’s a reason Matzo ball soup is sometimes called Jewish penicillin. The soup stock is full of minerals and vitamins to give your immune system a boost and the matzo ball is easy on a sore throat. Some places fill their Matzo ball soup with vegetables, but they’re cooked to the point where it’s easy to swallow. A nice hot cup of this soup in place of a meal when you have no appetite will go a long way to help you feel better.

If you’re looking for something creamy, but not too sweet or salty, try some butternut squash soup. Aside from coating your throat, this soup is high in vitamins because of the squash. As you know, vitamins are crucial in supporting your immune system when you have a cold. Give your body a boost with a bowl of this soup when you’re sick.
4. Tomato Soup
If you don’t like the taste of butternut squash, you can always try tomato soup. Make sure you get homemade soup, not the stuff from a can (which is high in sodium and has no nutritional value). The texture of tomato soup can help coat your throat and it’s a great soup to eat with a light sandwich. Also, tomatoes are high in lycopene, an antioxidant that helps reduce free radicals and toxins in your body. This is just what you need when you’re under the weather and taking lots of liver-taxing medications.
5. Egg Drop Soup (Authentic)
If you have access to an authentic Chinese restaurant that makes real egg drop soup (or you have a Chinese mom), this a nutritious and filling meal replacement. Eggs are full of nutrients and vitamins and real egg drop soup isn’t goopy and filled with starch. It’s watery and light and not too salty, great for sipping on when you can’t breathe too comfortably. Some people will even add chicken and vegetables in their egg drop soup for an extra dose of protein and vitamins.
