Best Beaches in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is known for its rainforest, friendly people, and gorgeous sands. Make sure to check out these beaches if you plan to travel to the tropical Central American country.

Jacó is a small beach town on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, known for its surfing, nightlife, and access to national parks. Enjoy the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean on the gray-sand beach by staying at one of the many oceanside resorts in this town.

If you love snorkeling, you’ll want to head to Samara, also on Costa Rica’s west coast. Plunge into the water to view the healthy reefs or for a chance to swim with stingrays and colorful fish. Expect a more laidback, locals-only scene in this tiny village, with fewer tourists and a quieter nightlife.

Playa Grande

Playa Grande is on the north Pacific coast of Costa Rica and it is part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park. It’s a prime nesting spot for leatherback turtles, so several sections are restricted or off-limits to the public. Tourists are only allowed access to the beach during the day, and around 6 PM, when the turtles come to shore to lay their eggs, police patrol the area to ensure there is no human contact with the wildlife.

Playa Hermosa

If you want a more tourist-friendly beach where you don’t have to worry about disturbing turtles, Playa Hermosa is the place to go. Hermosa is the Spanish word for gorgeous, and this beach lives up to its name. This resort town lets you indulge in watersports, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing and swimming. This is a family-friendly beach and a great place to meet like-minded tourists.

Cahuita truly has it all. In this Caribbean coast beach town, you can enjoy hiking, rainforest treks as well as all the scuba, snorkeling and watersports you can handle. There are 600 acres of coral reefs off the shore along with 55,000 acres of protected rainforest, making Cahuita ideal for vacationers whether they crave land or aquatic activity.
